World of Microbiology and Immunology

699 pages
(November 2002)
English
ISBN-13: 978-0787665401
This title in the popular World of...Series is a comprehensive, subject-specific, two-volume encyclopedic guide that covers the concepts, theories, discoveries and pioneers in microbiology and immunology for students, researchers, teachers and librarians. Using a mix of traditional academic and topical articles, World of Microbiology and Immunology addresses current ethical, legal and social issues with special emphasis given to biological warfare and terrorism. Included are 650 alphabetiy arranged and cross-referenced topical and biographical entries ranging in length from 200 to 1,000 words, as well as approximately 200 photographs and illustrations.
"Microbiology and immunology are sometimes seen as esoteric and highly specialized sciences with few interpreters to students and the lay public. The authors have selected 600 entries that highlight selected important persons, research facilities, terms, and concepts of both these fields... The is straightforward and only as technical as required. The aim is to increase curiosity and interest in these diverse and important disciplines, and to show the development and growing importance of both fields to human health. Though the editors emphasize student use, the major users will probably be persons wanting to learn a bit about terms they hear or read in scientific and medical news. In no way does this publication compete with professional encyclopedias designed for researchers and medical practitioners such as Encyclopedia of Microbiology or Encyclopedia of Immunology. Recommended for public libraries and general interest in academic libraries."
-- Booklist (April 2003)
"Another in Gale's World of series and edited by the Lerners, this set is the best so far. Entries are readable, providing information both basic and in depth. The most valuable portions are the biographies and the chronology... The editors make excellent use of photographs... Highly recommended. Public, community college, and undergraduate libraries."

On Drugs
By David Lenson
Publisher: University of Minnesota Press
Number Of Pages: 256
Publication Date: 1995-08
ISBN-10 / ASIN: 081662710X
ISBN-13 / EAN: 9780816627103
Binding: Hardcover
Summary: YOU GOTTA READ IT
Rating: 5
This is simply a spectacular book. No one has written so well about drugs. Lenson is brilliant on the effects of drugs: what it's like to be high on this or that. He's marvelous on the history of the reception of various drugs--how pot came into the US and how its cultural meanings changed over time. He's also astoundingly good at showing what role drugs have played in the cultural imagination of the past twenty years, and how the war against drugs functions as, among other things, a war to regularize, normalize and delimit consciousness. The writing is very clear, but highly sophisticated, nuanced and often poetic. You gotta read it.
Summary: A Thoughtful Look At Complexity

This book is clearly one of the best to ever address links between consciousness, drug consumption, and societal demands. It is superbly written, with entertaining references to science, literature, history, and music. The author reaches an intriguing set of conclusions linking our attitudes about people who want to alter consciousness, the ever-present desire to continue a consumerist culture, and growing ideas about multiculturalism. The tone is very friendly-- the sort of prose that makes you want to sit down with the author over a beer. I particularly like that he draws distinctions among different illicit drugs and shows an appreciation for their varied effects.

The European Pharmacopoeia is a single reference work for the quality control of medicines in Europe. Several legal texts make the European Pharmacopoeia mandatory:
A Convention on the Elaboration of a European Pharmacopoeia ratified in 2003 by 31 European countries and the European Union;
European Union directives 2001/83/EC and 2001/82/EC,on medicines for human use and for veterinary use, respectively, maintain the mandatory character of European Pharmacopoeia specifications on medicines as regards their qualitative and quantitative composition and the tests to be carried out on these medicines, the raw materials used in production and the intermediates of synthesis. All producers of medicines or substances for pharmaceutical use therefore must apply the quality standards of the European Pharmacopoeia for the marketing and use of these products in Europe. The texts of the European Pharmacopoeia are legally binding and compliance is enforced by the administrative or juridical authorities. The national authorities of the member states are bound to apply them if necessary replacing any national monograph on the same subject.
The 4th Edition consists of an initial volume 2002 (4.0) and a collection of 8 non-cumulative supplements (4.1) published three times a year following the decisions of each session of the European Pharmacopoeia Commission. With supplement 4.6, the 4th Edition comprises 1750 specific monographs, 285 general methods illustrated by figures or chromatograms and 2140 reagents. Every 4 months a new volume enters into force.

Indian Medicinal Plants: An Illustrated Dictionary
n 2004, Springer-Verlag Heidelberg published C.P.Khare’s "Encyclopedia of Indian Medicinal Plants" which contained 400 monographs comprising classical as well as contemporary research findings.
"Indian Medicinal Plants. An Illustrated Dictionary" is the second major one-volume reference work by C.P.Khare which has been dedicated to the distinguished scientist, Dr. A.P.J.Abdul Kalam, who did pioneering work by reviving the glory of medicinal and aromatic plants in Rashtrapati Bhavan.
Scientific monographs of "The Wealth of India" series (17 volumes) have been capsulised in the dictionary and corroborated with the judicious findings of German Commission E, European Cooperative on Phytotherapy (ESCOP) and WHO. Therapeutic leads, active indications and contraindications are salient features of the core text. These are based on herbal pharmacopoeias, compendiums and latest editions of standard reference works like "PDR for Herbal Medicines," "(Laurance) Review of Natural Products", "Natural Medicines Comprehensive Database". Leads for further research have been provided at a number of places.
The Dictionary is the first updated source of Ayurvedic, Unani and Siddha synonyms of their botanical counterparts, after a gap of more than 30 years. The synonyms which appeared in "The Wealth of India" series (1948-1976) and in Chopra’s "Glossary of Indian Medicinal Plants" (1956) have been updated till January, 2007.
More than 2000 medicinal plants of "The Ayurvedic Formulary of India" and "The Ayurvedic Pharmacopoeia of India" and more than 100 species of non-Indian origin, incorporated in "National Formulary of Unani Medicine" have been covered in the Dictionary. Divergent sources of Ayurvedic, Unani and Siddha herbs have been identified and a number of controversies have been sorted out.
Pharmacognosy experts have selected important herbs, which were specially collected from leading pharamaceutical companies and pharmacopoeial laboratories and included in the dictionary as four colour photographs under the "Crude Herb Identification Guide" section. This is a unique feature and makes it an exclusive treat.
The Dictionary has been presented in a user-friendly format, as a compact, handy, easy to use and moderately priced one-volume reference work. It unfolds hidden virtues and potentials of Indian herbs for busy professionals, researchers, practitioners of herbal as well as modern medicine, and library frequenters. It will prove a ready information source for students of botany, economic botany, pharmacy, agricultural and medical sciences, who aspire to have an edge over others and are keen to keep themselves abreast of the times.

Product Description:
A large number of chemical compunds are constantly being introduced and produced, both to assist and ease modern human life. Among these chemicals, industrial compounds represent a particular fraction of chemicals which are not intended for use in biological systems, but to which humans may be accidently exposed, whether in the workplace, by product application, or via the environment. Industrial chemicals, as opposed to pharmaceuticals and agrochemicals, are in many cases subjected only to a very basic examination of handling safety, and may lack further toxicity testing. This implies that essentially nothing is known about their bioavailability, metabolism, excretion and toxicological properties, unless problems arise.; Covering the investigation of industrial chemicals, this book focuses on their individual structure, biological fate, potential toxicity to mammals and the molecular mechanisms possibly underlying their adverse effects by highlighting the use and significance of experimental toxicology. Special emphasis is placed on mechanistic aspects in the safety assessment of industrial compounds, in addition to current regulatory and legal considerations.

Product Description:
Nutrients are gaining recognition for their role in protecting against the toxic effects of free radicals, alcohol and other substances. At the same time, advances in food technology, the appearance of novel foods and new ingredients have generated new toxicological issues and forced health and safety professionals to develop new and more reliable methods to assess their impact on our health. These issues are at the heart of the second edition of Nutritional Toxicology. The book discusses the role of nutrients in protecting the body against toxicants. It explores the overall importance of the metabolism of xenobiotics and antioxidant nutrients in their increasingly important role in protecting against oxidative damage generated by free radicals. The book also discusses components of the diet that can influence metabolism of drugs, how alcohol consumption affects nutritional status, and conversely, how nutritional status affects alcohol metabolism. The effect of age on the body's ability to metabolize drugs and toxicants is discussed in detail.

Product De******ion:
A New Avenue of Research Beyond Traditional Studies of Vitamin E
In the current literature, more than 95% of all studies of vitamin E are directed toward the specific exploration of the bioactive component α-tocopherol. Until recently, there has been a dearth of research into non-tocopherol vitamin E molecules. A unique resource that examines the newest developments in this area, Tocotrienols: Vitamin E Beyond Tocopherols focuses on the lesser-known vitamin E compound known as tocotrienol.
Explores Treatment Possibilities
Recognized as potent antioxidants, tocotrienols play a role in cholesterol reduction, tumor suppression, reversal of arteriosclerosis and protection of the heart against oxidative stress. Compiling contributions from leading researchers, this book builds upon a recent symposium sponsored by the American Oil Chemists Society. It begins with an overview of tocotrienols, and then examines their sources, chemistry and mechanisms of action. Contributors discuss the uses of tocotrienols in the prevention and treatment of cancer and heart disease, their metabolism and absorption and their potential in the treatment of infectious disease and neurodegeneration, as well as their use as a countermeasure against radiological threat.
For the past 10 years, Professors Ronald R. Watson and Victor R. Preedy have published books on bioactive nutrients and dietary supplements. Professor Watson has been and is currently funded to do research by grants from the American Heart Foundation and the U.S. National Institute of Heart, Lung, and Blood. By gathering the contributions contained in this volume, they have expanded the field of knowledge and forged a new path in disease treatment and prevention.

ISBN-13 / EAN: 9780444824066
Binding: Hardcover
Product Description:
For twenty years this book, now in its 5th edition, has provided information on adverse drug interactions that is unrivalled in coverage and scholarship.
Adverse drug reactions, many of them ascribable to interactions with other drugs or with chemical substances in food or the environment, are thought to cause or complicate one in twenty of hospital admissions.
The book is conveniently divided into two parts: Part 1 comments on drug interactions and their mechanisms, on a pharmacokinetic and pharmacodynamic level, while Part 2 consists of drug interaction tables, divided and subdivided into categories of disorders, and the drugs used in the treatment of these disorders.
If safety in drugs is to improve, education of prescribers is vitally important. This book, with its up-to-date and coordinated approach, serves that purpose well. The real threat, as the authors remind us, is the ignorance of practitioners, not the drug itself. The volume is therefore an essential addition to the shelves of those responsible for the prescription of drugs, in order to prevent a potential backlash when used in combination with other drugs or chemical substances.

Drug misuse is a major challenge for health professionals in the 21st century, and community pharmacy holds a key place in the management of prescribed medication, the provision of health education and promotion messages to drug users. Two decades ago there would have been no need for a book to describe such the role of community pharmacy; however, since more people are injecting drugs now and HIV is on the rise, community pharmacists have found their services in higher demand. The quality practice of tomorrow hinges on trained and competent practitioners working in a variety of community pharmacy settings. Drug Misuse and Community Pharmacy explains the historical, research and practical aspects. Experts use a practical and evidence-based approach to educate students of pharmacy, pre-registration pharmacists, community pharmacists working with drug users and anyone involved in developing and managing primary healthcare for drug misusers.

Pharmacy Law and Practice, Fourth Edition

Suitable for both students and practicing pharmacists, the latest edition of this classic textbook provides comprehensive coverage of an essential component of the U.K. pharmacy curriculum: pharmacy law and ethics. Completely rewritten since the last edition to reflect the rapid pace at which this field moves, it offers a clear, readable and non-technical guide on balancing the needs of patients with the letter of the law. It explains what happens and why in a reader-friendly format, taking a problem solving approach, and even provides an introduction to pharmacy issues for solicitors and legal personnel. Any pharmacist, student, or regulatory authority will find it appropriate for either a serious study or for answering questions which occur in practice.
* Adopts a unique approach discussing topics thematically rather than statute based
* Unlike competitor's, the style of the book is clear, accurate and succinct, avoiding long complex sentences which are so common in legal textbooks. The law is logically presented, even when it is complex or difficult, reasons for existence of law are discussed, and lack of clarity in the law is indicated where necessary.
* Includes the new and updated NHS pharmacy contract and discusses changes in many areas of relevant law
* Updated chapters on employment law, human rights, informed consent, confidentiality, and changes in the NHS structure
* Applicable for day-to-day use by community pharmacists and pharmacy students

Essentials of Pharmacy Law -Crc Press Pharmacy Education Series

This book examines the laws and regulations relating to the practice of pharmacy, and the regulation and control of drugs cosmetics, and medical devices. This user-friendly text is a compilation and commentary of selected federal laws and regulations pertaining to the general practice of pharmacy in the United States. It covers topics in a simple and concise format. Furthermore, case studies and review questions and a bulleted summary of key points make for easy reading and aid in comprehension. Essentials of Pharmacy Law will be extremely useful to senior pharmacy students preparing for the Multi-State Jurisprudence Exam (NABLEX MJPE). as well as the voluntary Pharmacist Competency Exam offered to practicing pharmacists. It alsoalso serves as a valuable reference for pharmacy students, practicing pharmacists seeking licensure by reciprocity and/or preparing for the MJPE, pharmacy technicians who are in need of a comprehensive update, and other interested healthcare professionals

Short, concise discussion on each category (not specific drugs) with notes on drugs that have interesting or significant deviation from category. Explanations are short and sometimes thin, but if you do the practice questions you realize a lot of the teaching info in book comes from the questions. Highly recommended review book.
Review:
[perfect for couse work
This is the number one book for course work but will too be detailed for the step 1.IT has nice tables and easy to read format that aids in remebering these drugs. I remebered being told that this book ws too detailed for step 1 before i took the exam, but i didnt listen and i ended up wasting precious time reading the details not tested in step 1.so i would not want anyone else to make the same mistake. I studied first aid later and i found out that it helped me more for the step 1 than this book. i ended up makin a 229/95.
Review:
Best pharm book
This book is way better than Lippincott (which has prettier pictures, but isn't very useful when you need details-- don't be fooled)! I found the information organized, thorough (without being exhaustive), and well-written. Great for reference during 1st and 2nd years of med school; I hate pharm, but this book made it tolerable. For boards prep, I would recommend using it along with the Lange pharm flashcards.

Biology of the Mammary Gland
328 pages
August 31, 2000
English
ISBN-13: 978-0306464140
Proceedings of the European Cooperation in the Field of Scientific and Technical Research (COST 825) Symposium on Mammary Gland Biology, held September 16-18, 1999, in Tours, France.
It is difficult to overstate the evolutionary and functional significance of mammary tissue in biology. Substantial progress has been made by researchers in various disciplines, particularly over the last fifteen years, towards realizing the potential of this tissue to yield powerful experimental models for morphogenesis and tissue development; for cellular differentiation; for the biosynthesis and secretion of proteins, lipids, small molecules and inorganic salts; and for the coordination and regulation of these processes. More recently, the possibility of exploiting the secretory epithelial cells of mammary tissue as `cell factories' has become a reality and the recombinant production by lactating animals of an increasing number of proteins, valuable both in the pharmaceutical and `nutraceutical' fields, is in progress or under development.
Also in this sphere of agricultural production, genetic as well as nutritional technologies are under investigation and exploitation to optimize milk composition for various end-uses - for instance in food process and manufacture. The possibilities of deriving health benefit from the bioactive properties of some of the minor constituents of milk are emerging to counter the highly-publicized negative health impact of excessive consumption of saturated animal fats. In human nutrition and medicine, the mammary gland is both a source of nutrition to the neonate and a potential health threat to the adult female - breast cancer remains the major single cause of female mortality in most developed countries.
This volume provides a unique glimpse into our understanding, at the cutting edge of a variety of disciplines, of this versatile and extraordinary tissue, at the birth of the twenty-first century

Tocotrienols: Vitamin E Beyond Tocopherols
By Ronald R. Watson, Victor R. Preedy

Publisher: CRC
Number Of Pages: 324
Publication Date: 2008-08-26
ISBN-10 / ASIN: 1420080377
ISBN-13 / EAN: 9781420080377
Binding: Hardcover
