Anyone who wants to do something with ethanol should be forced to buy and devour this book before proceeding further (it'll save them years and millions of dollars in actually getting one done.)

The design of signalling cascades is explained by describing central signalling pathways: the Ras-regulated MAPK and PI-3 pathways; the Rho/Rac/Cdc 42 pathway controlling chemotaxis and regulating the cytoskeleton; the G protein coupled receptor cascades in response to sensory and hormonal signals; signalling by TGF-ss in morphogenesis; cytokine signalling that controls haemopoiesis. There is also a discussion of the insulin response. As phosphorylation - dephosphorylation is involved in nearly all cellular regulatory processes, Part 1 concludes with a synopsis of its role in signalling. Part 2 describes the implementation of the signalling cascades focusing on the effect on gene transcription. After a brief description of the transcriptional machinery the regulation of transcription by cytokines and growth factors in the control of cell growth and the mechanisms and sites of control are discussed in detail. The regulators discussed include Jun/Fos, NF-AT, SREBPs, and STATs. The next two chapters cover gene regulation by nuclear receptors, including both the steroid hormone receptors and non-steroid nuclear receptors e.g. the retinoic acid receptors RAR and RXR. Part 3 studies the global cellular regulatory programs for the control of cell growth and proliferation. The first chapter concerns the regulation of the cell cycle and the role of the cyclin-dependent kinases, telomerase, Ran, and cell cycle checkpoints. The next topic is the signalling pathways in apoptosis: the TNF-receptor family death receptors, caspases, and the intracellular apoptosis signals and the role of apoptosis in the lifecycle of cells. Part 3 ends with a discussion of the signal pathways involved in the immune response, focusing on the involvement of cell-cell interactions. Part 4 considers loss of regulatory control and its consequences with respect to the molecular basis of cancer. It first describes the cellular regulatory proteins that have oncogenic potential, how they can become oncogenic and cause the transformation of normal cells to cancerous cells. Next is an analysis of the loss of developmental controls, the APC protein, ss-catenin, and the Wnt pathway, that lead to mature terminally differentiated cells reverting to immature embryonic cells. The book ends with a summary of the molecular and cellular causes of cancer and an outlook for novel therapies. Throughout the text, the emphasis is on structure and mechanism and is well illustrated with 200 figures. It is not unusual for cytologic specimens to be the only diagnostic samples available from patients with cancer. Many ancillary tests traditionally performed on histologic material are now being performed on cytologic specimens. One such technique, immunocytochemistry (ICC), has already proved to be important in diagnostic tumor pathology.
This atlas examines the value of ICC as well as its limitations in contemporary cytology. Methods have been refined and high-quality reagents are now available. As a result, technical problems no longer present a major concern in this field. This volume will briefly address the technical aspects of ICC by providing practical advice for the users and analytical aspects of ICC, including correct selection of markers for specific differential diagnoses and incorporation of results in final cytologic interpretation; illustrate the utilization of ICC in the resolution of some common diagnostic problems in fine needle aspiration and body cavity fluid cytology. ICC of undifferentiated malignant neoplasms, carcinomas of unknown origin, and most importantly its utilization in specific differential diagnoses that are based on cytomorpholoy and patient’s clinical history is also discussed. Performance Standards for Antimicrobial Disk Susceptibility Tests; Approved - M2-A9

Susceptibility testing is indicated for any organism that contributes to an infectious process warranting antimicrobial chemotherapy, if its susceptibility cannot be reliably predicted from knowledge of the organism.s identity. Susceptibility tests are most often indicated when the causative organism is thought to belong to a species capable of exhibiting resistance to commonly used antimicrobial agents.
A variety of laboratory methods can be used to measure the in vitro susceptibility of bacteria to antimicrobial agents. In many clinical microbiology laboratories, an agar disk diffusion method is used routinely for testing common, rapidly growing, and certain fastidious bacterial pathogens. Clinical and Laboratory Standards Institute document M2-A9.Performance Standards for Antimicrobial Disk Susceptibility Tests; Approved Standard.Ninth Edition includes a series of procedures to standardize the way disk diffusion tests are performed. The Performance, applications, and limitations of the current CLSI-recommended methods are also described.
The supplemental information (M100 tables) presented with this standard represents the most current information for drug selection, interpretation, and quality control using the procedures standardized in M2. These tables, as in previous years, have been updated and should replace tables published in earlier years. Changes in the tables since the most recent edition (M100-S16) appear in boldface type.
Additionally, a glossary of antibiotic terms, classes, and abbreviations (for use with antimicrobial susceptibility testing disks and other in vitro test devices) has been added to the tables. It is anticipated that this glossary will provide an additional informational resource to users of the M2 standard, as it outlines antimicrobial terminology used in the susceptibility testing documents that may be unfamiliar or confusing to laboratory users. The glossary, as part of the M100 tabular information, will be continuously updated in future (yearly) revisions of M100.

An excellent natural remedy book!
This book has a lot of useful information about natural remedies and even how to make herbal tea yourself.
Illnesses are listed in alphabetical order with recommended natural remedies.
The Index has herbs etc..listed also in alphabetical order with page numbers for ********.
Dr. Duke does provide words of caution where he feels it is neccessary.
I recommend this book. The price is very affordable and the book has an extensive list of natural remedies.This book is also very well organised.

complete herbal
This is the best book I could find and read concerning the herbal concoctions on the market today,but, make sure you get this book, not one of the many so named "green" books, there are many books out on this subject and some are very very similarily named.This book has almost all of the herbs listed and uses for
them.I highly recommend it to herbal health persons.

Rating: 2 I'm shipping this book back. It isn't worth the price tag given the info it provides. It is basically a regurjitation of pubmed.com research and abstracts. In fact with some of the entries I can almost read verbatim the abstract that it references. (In general I find CRC press books too pricey)

Very outstanding among the books on chinese herbs written in English (to be fair, many better books in Chinese exist but not well translated!)
Starting from the chemistry and ending with the toxicology, each important herbs included are presented in a well-balanced format; the therapeutic values are thus projected clearly on the empirical grounds.
The new edition is an updated gist of those related scientific works done but could not be tracked on the great MedLine due to the ******** barrier. Summary: Thorough...a bit pricy, but well worth the expense.

As a Ph.D. student in biochemistry I have sought out critical references that would be accurate and legitimate treatises on the biochemistry and pharmacology of herbs. If one is truly interested in understanding the biochemistry and pharmacology of Chinese herbs, then this is the reference to purchase. Very intelligently presented in a concise scientific journal format, presenting critical and relevant studies on the herbs as they are currently understood with many references to the original research papers. I would certainly purchase other titles similar to this if their coverage of other herbs (e.g. South American, Ayurvedic) were as comprehensive, relevant, and credible as this one. Not for the herbologist interested in a hokey metaphysical distortion of truth. Ideal for the intelligent and/or educated layman that really wants to know what compounds are present in various Chinese herbs and what their activities are.
Pitfalls: Some listings are very brief (less than a page) For instance the discussion of Centella asiatica is only 1/2 page and listed under antipyretic herbs and makes no mention of nootropic effects if they, in fact, exist-Nobody's perfect.
